"Food grade tallow" refers to rendered beef fat that has been processed to a quality suitable for human consumption. This means the tallow is free from impurities and contaminants, making it safe for cooking, baking, or other culinary applications. While anyone can claim their tallow is safe for human consumption, only the USDA inspection stamp provides consumers with confidence that the product has been assessed for safety and quality. In general, tallow that has passed USDA inspection meets the criteria for skincare/cosmetic use, and in my opinion, what is good for your gut is also good for your skin!

Tallow can be used as a moisturizer on its own or combined with other skincare ingredients. Tallow is said to be biocompatible and rich in triglycerides, specifically oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and linoleic acid, which lend it a wide range of industrial applications. Tallow also contains essential vitamins, such as A, D, K, E, and B12. Topical application of lipids can improve skin barrier function and may be used to treat skin conditions; however, one must be cautious. Here are some recommendations:

1. If you have never tried tallow before, start with a tallow cream with few added ingredients, or use pure tallow if you don’t mind the scent. Keep in mind that Tallow that has been highly processed, refined, or deodorized might not be recommended for human consumption.
2. Choosing the right source is important. Grass-fed animals are generally higher in nutrients like omega-3s, CLA, and vitamins A, D, E, and K. Additionally, ensure that the animals have not been raised with hormones or antibiotics.
   
3. Always conduct a patch test first on the area where you plan to use it. Almost everyone can safely use tallow as a body moisturizer, but some may experience adverse facial reactions.
4. Many people who can't tolerate tallow on their facial skin might try an oil cleanse. This involves rubbing tallow on your face and removing the excess oil with a wet cotton pad. This method can help remove impurities and add a lipid barrier for extra moisture to your skin.
