Easy to Make Tallow Candles for the Holidays
Making tallow candles can be a perfect Christmas gift and also a fun project during family holiday gatherings! Here’s a simple guide to help you get started:
Materials Needed:
- 100% Grassfed Beef Tallow
- Wicks: Make sure to choose a wick that's appropriate for the size of your candle.
- Wick holder or wood stick
- Container or Mold: Glass jars, metal tins, or silicone molds work well.
- Fragrance oil (optional): For scented candles we recommend cosmetic grade fragances. Don't use essential oils, those are not meant to be burned.
- Double boiler or Crock pot
- Thermometer: To monitor the fat temperature.
- Stirring tool: A spoon or a popsicle stick.
- Pouring pitcher (optional): For easy pouring.
Instructions:
- Prepare Your Workspace: Lay down newspaper or a disposable tablecloth to catch any spills. Gather all your materials.
- Melt the fat:
- Set up a double boiler by filling the bottom pot with water and bringing it to a gentle simmer.
- Add your fat to the top pot or heat-safe bowl. Monitor the temperature with the thermometer; aim for about 170-180°F (77-82°C). Let it heat for 30-60 mins after is melted to evaporate any possible remaining liquid in the fat.
- Add Fragrance (if desired):
- Once the fat is melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool until it reaches 110 -130 °F max .
- If using, add fragrance oil (typically about 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax) and stir well.
- Attach and secure the Wick:
- If you're using a container, secure the wick to the bottom using a dab of melted fat or a wick sticker. For molds, ensure the wick is centered. Use a wick holder (or a pencil) to keep the wick centered as the fat hardens.
- Pour the Fat:
- Carefully pour the melted fat into your container or mold, leaving a little space at the top.
- If you're pouring into multiple containers, do it slowly and steadily. Avoid moving the container while the fat is still liquid.
- Cool the Candle:
- Allow the candle to cool and harden completely, which may take a few hours. For best results, let it sit at room temperature.
- Trim the Wick: Once the candle is set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch above the surface of the fat.
- Cure the Candle (optional): For stronger scent throw, let your candles cure for a few days to a week before burning.
- Enjoy! Light your candle and enjoy the ambiance. Tallow candles can last for years and retain their texture and original shape. It also have much longer burn time than any other material.
Tips:
- Experiment with different scents and decorations for variety.
- Always follow safety precautions while working with hot fat.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case!
Happy candle making!
